Barbara McDevitt, MD, FACEP
Barbara McDevitt , MD, FAAAP, is the Director of the Department of Pediatric
Emergency Medicine at St. Barnabas Medical Center. She is currently the co-director
of the St. Barnabas Medical Systems pediatric emergency medicine committee. In that
capacity she is responsible for the development and implementation of pediatric protocols
for the system's emergency medicine departments throughout the state.
Dr. McDevitt also serves as the Chief Pediatric Officer for the Superior Insurance Company
Risk Retention Group.
Prior to assuming the role of Director at St. Barnabas, Dr. McDevitt was the Associate
Director of the Department of Pediatric Emergency Medicine at Morristown Memorial Hospital,
Morristown, NJ. For four years before that she served as Associate Director at the New Jersey
Children's Hospital at NBIMC, Newark, NJ. While at NBIMC she was also Director of Quality Improvement
for the ED.
From 2003 to 2005, Dr. McDevitt served as chairman of the American College of Emergency Physicians
New Jersey chapter of Pediatric Emergency Medicine.
Prior to coming to New Jersey, Dr. McDevitt worked as an attending in the ED of INOVA, the
Children's Hospital of Northern Virginia. She trained in pediatrics at Georgetown University and
completed her fellowship in Pediatric Emergency Medicine at Children's National Medical Center,
Washington, DC. In addition to her extensive training in pediatric emergency medicine, she has had
the unique experience of caring for chronically ill children with complex medical neurological,
cardiac, and respiratory illnesses. She acquired these skills and experience while serving as the
Associate Director of the Hospital for Sick Children in Washington, DC.
Her most recent publications are to appear in the 2007 Baren: Textbook of Pediatric Emergency.
